The other day, we were watching On the Outs, a movie about a few teenagers who made some bad decisions in their lives and ended up in jail. It was one of those: holy crap does that really happen in real life movies. Turns up it does… I’ve seen it happen in my city before.
One of the girls in the movies is ordered to wear a ankle bracelet and put on house arrest. My sister commented that she has friends at school that wear them. I spoke before I thought and said: Who would want to be friends with a person who wears one?
And after my mom’s comment was: How can you say that, you don’t know what has led up to that.
Which is true. I don’t. I don’t know every person’s story and maybe the kids that are my sister’s friends didn’t want to be in that position, but were forced into that position because of the lives they live, the background of their family… anything.
Recently, it was brought to my attention that someone close to the family wears one. Now, I’m not close with the person… he just holds a relationship with the family because of certain circumstances. He wears one not because he’s a bad person but because of something he did almost 20 years ago… to this day, it haunts him.
And now, I feel completely awful because I judged a few books, my sister’s friends, by their covers.
So… have you ever judged a person before you even knew them?
