I’ve been struggling lately with getting through the day without stressing myself out. It’s been hard with my recent diagnosis and my decision to resign from my full-time job. Stress is a part of life. Everyone deals with it. Here’s five simple ways that I cope with stress.
1.) Go for a Walk or Run
If you’re feeling down, upset, frustrated, or even just tired, put on your shoes and walk or run it out. It’s an easy way to just forget things for 30 – 45 minutes and when you’re finished, you’ll have a clearer mindset to finish or get through what you need to. I try to do at least a mile but for others a short walk around the block may work just fine.
When I really just need a break from the world I turn off my iPhone for an hour or two and let myself be alone. It’s okay! That email will still be there when you return. Facebook, Twitter and Instagram aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. If you’re not comfortable with completely turning your phone off, try just putting it on silent. Sometimes the constant pinging is enough to push me over the edge.
3.) Read a Book
Escape reality for a bit and read a book that takes you into another world. Reading sometimes relaxes and calms your mind so when you get back to work you’ll be refreshed.
4.) Jam Out to Your Favorite Songs
I have a Spotify playlist with all of my favorite songs, when I’m feeling like the entire world is against me I hit shuffle and jam out. Let yourself go and belt out the lyrics as loud as you can. Seriously, grab your hairbrush microphone and dance around the room. Have fun and just enjoy yourself!
5.) Breathe and Stretch
This is great for when you don’t have lots of time or can’t leave your desk. With your feet flat on the floor, lean forward, rounding your back, and take a deep breath… then lean back and exhale. Repeat 5 times. You’ll feel the tension leave your body.
