For me, summertime is all about the familia! The school year is always go, go, go… but once school’s out for summer, it’s all about relaxing and enjoying each other’s company.
We’re part Mexican, so there’s a good amount of us, and it’s usually hard to get together but we make sure to have a small backyard barbecue at one of our houses at least once a year. It ends up being in the summer because the girls are home from college, my mom and aunt are off of work, and the kids are out of school giving us a break from the everyday hustle and bustle.
My cousins were my first friends and having them around just makes everything feel better. Most of us are adults now, living our own lives, fulfilling our own dreams and months away from them tend to feel like years. Too many years!
Since there are so many of us, planning our small get-togethers feels like we’re getting ready to throw a full out fiesta (which is totally fine with me)!
We head to #Walmart to pick up all the necessities which include burgers and buns, tortilla chips, guacamole ingredients, everything needed for Mexican street corn, watermelon, and lots of Dr Pepper, of course!
Did you know that starting June 15th, you could #PickYourPepper? The unique Dr Pepper packaging was designed for millennials by millennials, allowing you to choose a label that fits you and your individuality. It’s pretty neat, actually! You get to pick a Dr Pepper bottle or can that truly speaks to you.
The day of, there are plenty of hands to help with everything. The guys actually tend to fight over who mans the grill, which usually ends with one of them sulking. It’s pretty hilarious.
The girls are in the kitchen where we finish up with the sides, grabbing cold bottles of Dr Pepper from the holder on the counter as we go.
Anytime you buy Dr Pepper between June 15th and August 15th, you can upload your receipt here to get the holder featured above and/or other prizes!
- Spend $5, get a unicorn beverage holder inflatable.
- Spend $10, get a Walmart eGift Card worth $5.
- Spend $20, get a 6 pack can/bottle holder with ice pack. (above)
- Spend $40, get a Dr Pepper bottle shaped pool float.
We head back outside while the boys finish grilling. They have the music going. Cumbias, corridas, bachata, ranchera, duranguense… you name it, they’ve got it playing. I make sure to add a few of my Latin pop favorites to the queue. The patio turns into a dance floor, Dr Pepper bottles turn into microphones and laughter begins to fill the air.
My sister always steals the show! I live with her, but college classes, her first job, and all her cheerleading practices take up most of her time. However, all the stress her freshman year put on her seemed to diminish the second “Despacito” started playing.
Once all the food is set out, we fill our plates and grab a seat. Sitting in a circle, we eat and catch up. This is always my favorite part! Those months that felt like years are forgotten as we talk about our successes and failures, argue over whose football team is going to have a better season, and rekindle with our favorite childhood memories.
As the sun starts to come down, my cousin grabs the last Dr Pepper can and we finish the last of the chips and guacamole, our mini-fiesta coming to an end. Moments like this one make me really miss them. We get so caught up in our everyday lives that we sometimes forget to make time for each other. It’s understandable, yes, but it’s also so important that we find the time for our familia.
One summertime fiesta just isn’t enough. I make sure to invite them back for a round two!
